The 1855 Classification was created for the Paris Universal Exhibition at the request of Emperor Napoleon III, to showcase Bordeaux’s finest wines. The Bordeaux Chamber of Commerce entrusted the task to the Bordeaux Trade Brokers, who based it on long-standing trade knowledge, recognizing each estate’s terroir and reputation. Published on April 18, 1855, it reflected the wine market's reality at the time. Today, the Conseil des Grands Crus Classés 1855 defends, promotes, and educates about the Classification through economic, technical, and wine tourism initiatives.
